NBCC - Fuelling the Future: Who Picks the Winner?
Join us for an exciting panel discussion hosted by NBCC, WISTA UK, SANDS and GARD UK at the Norwegian Ambassadors Residence !
The shipping industry faces one of the most consequential investment decisions of the decade: which alternative fuel to back, and when. With EU emissions regulations already biting and the IMO's net-zero framework now in force, the cost of inaction is measurable. But the cost of backing the wrong fuel may be higher still. Ports and shipowners are locked in a standoff, each waiting for the other to commit before making billion-dollar infrastructure and fleet decisions. Someone has to blink first. And when they do, the question of who bears the risk, and on what terms, falls on lawyers, financiers and insurers.
This event will examine the commercial and legal frameworks that are emerging to break that deadlock. From long-term offtake structures and joint ventures to shipping corridor initiatives and the limits of MOU-based cooperation, we will explore where the contractual and financial risk sits, and what further intervention, regulatory or otherwise, may ultimately be required. Rolf Thore Roppestad, CEO of Gard and Chair of the International Group of P&I Clubs, will set the scene, drawing on his long-standing view that the legal and regulatory landscape is central to the transition and he will be followed by a panel discussion examining some of the challenges in more detail. This is a conversation for those who will be advising on, financing, underwriting, and structuring the deals that move this industry forward.
